PITTSBURGH—Pitt Football's fifth spring practice reflected a team beginning to find its rhythm again, as the Panthers continued to emphasize consistency across the roster.
Thursday's session showed progress on both sides of the ball coming off Tuesday's practice, particularly on offense where timing and efficiency remain key points of focus.
"We need to do a better job getting first downs and finishing drives," offensive coordinator Kade Bell said. "If we do that, we can be a really good offense."
Through five practices, Bell has seen improvement in tempo and decision-making as the unit continues to settle in. The emphasis has been on playing fast, trusting the system and avoiding unnecessary mistakes.
At the skill positions, Pitt continues to develop depth with a mix of returning contributors and young talent. Bell noted that positions like receiver and running back provide opportunities for early impact.
"If you can run and make plays in space, you can contribute," he said.
Tight end Max Hunt has been one of several players showing growth this spring. After adding strength in the offseason, Hunt said he feels more comfortable handling multiple responsibilities within the offense.
"I feel great," Hunt said. "It's helped me in the run game and allowed me to do more overall."
That comfort has also translated into a greater leadership role.
"We've got new guys in the room, so I take pride in showing them the way," he said. "Just being more vocal and helping the team."
Defensively, linebacker Jeremiah Marcelin's return from injury has brought added energy and perspective. After missing time last season, he has approached the spring with a renewed mindset.
"It was a blessing just to be back out there," Marcelin said. "It makes you hungrier. You want to prove something to yourself."
Marcelin used his time away to grow mentally, leaning into film study and learning from teammates, something he believes is now showing up in his play and communication.
"Just being clear, no grey area," he said. "Making sure everyone knows what we're doing."
That mentality reflects the broader tone of the defense, where competition and high expectations continue to drive development.
"We're trying to be the best every year," Marcelin said. "That's the standard."
As Pitt moves deeper into spring camp, the focus remains on steady improvement, refining details, building depth and establishing consistency.
"Year three is when you typically make a jump," Bell said. "We've improved, but we're not where we want to be yet. That's what's exciting."
With multiple groups showing progress, the Panthers' fifth spring practice marked another step forward as they continue building toward the season ahead.
The team's first scrimmage will take place this Saturday.
