CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Cameron Corhen and Nojus Indrusaitis each scored 11 points, but No. 18/17 Virginia pulled away for a 67-47 win over Pitt Tuesday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Panthers (9-14, 2-8 ACC) were hampered by 17 turnovers that led to 23 Virginia points. The Cavaliers (19-3, 8-2 ACC) held the lead for more than 34 minutes of the contest and pulled away behind a balanced offensive attack.
Pitt started strong, taking a 7-3 lead on the strength of five early points from Corhen, including a three-pointer. But Virginia responded with a 12-0 run, fueled by turnovers, to build a 15-7 advantage midway through the first half.
The Panthers went more than four minutes without a field goal during that stretch, and the Cavaliers extended the lead to as many as 14 at halftime, taking a 33-20 advantage into the break. Pitt shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and committed 10 turnovers, leading to 12 Virginia points.
In the second half, Virginia pushed the margin to 17 before Pitt made a push. The Panthers got as close as 12 on a pair of Corhen free throws at 49-37 with 9:23 remaining, and then forced a shot clock violation on the ensuing possession. But the momentum was short-lived, as a turnover on the other end led to back-to-back Virginia three-pointers that pushed the lead back to 18.
The Cavaliers maintained a comfortable margin from there, leading by as many as 20 in the final minute.
Corhen finished with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting and grabbed four rebounds with two assists, while Indrusaitis added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Damarco Minor and Roman Siulepa each contributed eight points, and Omari Witherspoon posted seven points and six rebounds while logging a team-high 38 minutes. Pitt played without leading scorer Brandin Cummings due to injury.
Virginia was led by Sam Lewis, who knocked down four three-pointers and scored 15 points. Chance Mallory added 11 points off the bench along with four steals, and Thijs De Ridder recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass.
The Cavaliers outrebounded Pitt 38-31 and held a 13-8 advantage on the offensive boards. Virginia converted 18 fast break points to Pitt's eight and shot 44.1 percent from the floor compared to 37.0 percent for the Panthers.
The loss drops Pitt to 1-6 all-time at John Paul Jones Arena and extends Virginia's lead in the all-time series to 21-6.
Pitt returns to action Saturday as the Panthers host SMU. The tip time has been moved up to 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on The CW.
