PITTSBURGH—Joe Bowen didn't need much time to know Pitt was the right move.
The Panthers' new linebackers coach and run game coordinator said joining Pat Narduzzi's staff was a "no-brainer" for him and his family, citing Pitt's defensive tradition and stability as a match for the way he wants to coach.
"I've tried to be very intentional with the jobs I've taken," Bowen said. "I want to be around great people you can continue to grow from and challenge yourself with. The tradition, the history, the stability and the success, it aligned well with my core beliefs."
Bowen arrives in Pittsburgh after serving as defensive coordinator at Buffalo, and he believes his experience fits naturally within Pitt's established defensive identity, especially in a scheme that features three linebackers on the field every snap.
"I think it's a very good marriage," Bowen said. "You want to respect what's been done here. I always say, if it ain't broke, find a way to make it better. The goal will be to build upon that."
Bowen's approach with the linebackers centers on accountability, and he emphasized four key traits in his room—focus, intent, response and energy—as the standard he wants players to bring to their work.
"We want to play with our hair on fire," Bowen said. "Can I be focused in every single meeting? Can I play this game with violent intentions? Can I be intentional with my work, with my workouts, with my relationships? Can I show a great response when adversity hits? And can I bring great energy to the building every single day?"
As run game coordinator, Bowen said the foundation remains the same, with a collaborative plan that ties together the front, the fits and the pressure packages.
"When you're part of a defensive staff like this, it's a collaborative effort," Bowen said. "We have a very well-established run defense here. You've got to be great tacklers."
Bowen is also familiar with Western Pennsylvania from previous recruiting stops and said the region's identity stands out.
"I love the blue-collar mentality in this city," he said. "There's great football here, great high school coaches, guys that love the game. I want to be around people that love football and love to compete."
Bowen will recruit New Jersey and part of the Houston area, but he summed up his broader approach with a line that drew smiles.
"Wherever there are linebackers looking to take people's soul and run and hit," Bowen said, "I'll be there."
