PITTSBURGH – Freshman forward Roman Siulepa scored a game-high 22 points as Pitt (10-17, 3-11 ACC) snapped a season-long five-game losing streak with a 73-68 victory over Notre Dame (12-15, 3-11 ACC) Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. With the win, Pitt stays in contention for a bid to the ACC Tournament in Charlotte March 10-14.
Siulepa delivered one of his best performances of the season, shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range. He added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals while playing a pivotal role on both ends of the floor. Nojus Indrusaitis added a career-high 17 points off the bench, tying his career-best with four three-pointers.
The Panthers led for more than 30 minutes, but Notre Dame made a charge in the second half. After Pitt built an 11-point advantage at 37-26 with 15:04 remaining, the Fighting Irish slowly reeled the Panthers in, taking a 47-46 lead with 7:30 to play.
Notre Dame still led 49-48 with 6:29 to play but Indrusaitis scored eight points during a decisive 10-0 Pitt run that slammed the door. The Fighting Irish got as close as three in the latter moments but Pitt sealed the victory at the free-throw line.
Cameron Corhen contributed 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Omari Witherspoon dished out five assists to go with eight points and seven rebounds. Barry Dunning, Jr. chipped in eight points and three assists.
Pitt's defense proved to be the difference, especially in the first half. The Panthers held Notre Dame to just 23.7 percent from three-point range (9-of-38) and forced the Fighting Irish into a difficult shooting night. The Panthers also dominated in transition, outscoring Notre Dame 23-1 in fast break points.
After a sluggish first half that saw both teams shoot below 30 percent from the field, Pitt caught fire in the second half. The Panthers shot 63.6 percent from the floor and 60 percent from three-point range over the final 20 minutes, scoring 50 points after intermission.
Cole Certa led Notre Dame with 16 points, while Ryder Frost added 12 off the bench. Carson Towt grabbed 13 rebounds for the Fighting Irish.
With the win, Pitt and Notre Dame are now tied for the final spot in the ACC Tournament with matching 3-11 league records. The Panthers, though, now own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Fighting Irish with four games remaining in the regular season.
Pitt now makes a trip to California for road games against Stanford (Wednesday at 8 p.m.) and Cal (Saturday at 4 p.m.). The Panthers will return home to host Florida State on Wednesday, March 4 at 9 p.m. for Senior Night.
