PITTSBURGH – No. 20/19 Louisville made 11 three-pointers in the first half and raced out to a 31-point halftime lead en route to a 100-59 victory over Pitt Saturday night at the Petersen Events Center. The loss dropped Pitt to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in ACC play.
It marked the Panthers' first game against a top-25 opponent this season, as No. 20/19 Louisville improved to 13-5 and 3-3 in conference action.
Louisville jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the opening minutes, converting three early Pitt turnovers into eight points during the run. Isaac McKneely knocked down three three-pointers during the surge before Brandin Cummings answered with a wing three to stop the Cardinals' momentum.
The reprieve was short-lived. Louisville continued to find open looks from beyond the arc and pushed the lead past 20 at 28-7. The Cardinals used an 18-1 run to build a 39-8 advantage before Roman Siulepa's corner three stopped the bleeding.
Louisville connected on 11-of-19 three-pointers (57.9 percent) in the opening half and held a 22-11 rebounding edge to take a 53-22 lead into the break.
Pitt played more evenly in the second half, shooting 46.4 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Damarco Minor and Omari Witherspoon each connected from three-point range and Barry Dunning, Jr. scored inside as the Panthers found better offensive rhythm, though they were unable to make a significant dent in the deficit.
Cummings led Pitt with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting, whileDunning, Jr. added nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Siulepa and Nojus Indrusaitis each contributed eight points, and Minor finished with seven points, seven assists and two steals.
Louisville finished 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from three-point range for the game and shot 63.2 percent from the field overall. Ryan Conwell led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
Pitt will look to rebound Wednesday when the Panthers travel to Boston College for a 7 p.m. tip. The game will be televised on ACC Network.
