PITTSBURGH— The University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University have added four future football games beginning in 2033, the schools announced today.
After a three-season break, the series is slated to resume in 2029. With today's extension, the Panthers and Mountaineers are now scheduled to meet annually from 2029–36 in a continuing home-and-home format. Pitt will host in 2029, 2031, 2033 and 2035.
"The Backyard Brawl is more than a game: it's history, passion, and pride passed down through generations," Director of Athletics Allen Greene said. "Extending this rivalry ensures that student-athletes and fans alike continue to experience one of college football's greatest traditions, and we couldn't be more excited for what's ahead."
"I couldn't be more thrilled for what this means for both Pitt and West Virginia," added head coach Pat Narduzzi. "But this goes far beyond four more games and the 75 miles separating us. This paves the way for future Panthers to carry on the history of this rivalry, while current ones get to forge new legacies for years to come. This extension isn't just for Pitt and West Virginia, but for college football fans everywhere."
The Backyard Brawl is not only one of college football's most colorful rivalries, but also one of the oldest. The inaugural game was played in 1895. The 107 all-time meetings are the most for either school against any opponent, with the 108th game kicking off tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in Morgantown.
Pitt leads the series, 63-41-3.
