PITTSBURGH — As training camp continues, the Panthers held their 13th practice of the preseason on Friday. Joining Head Coach Pat Narduzzi for media availability were tight end Jake Overman, wide receiver Kenny Johnson, defensive lineman Sean FitzSimmons, and linebacker Cameron Lindsey, each offering their perspective on the team and the push toward the Aug. 30 season opener against Duquesne.
Here are five key takeaways from Day 17:
1. Learning From Everyone
Johnson said he doesn't limit his preparation to just his position group. He studies players all over the field to find ways to improve.
"That's something I prioritize in my game," Johnson said. "I go down and look at the D-line, I look at every position and see what I can take from every group. I even look at the O-line—how can I improve my blocking? Just being knowledgeable. I want to take in all the knowledge I can from everybody."
2. Lindsey Shows Growth Heading into Sophomore Season
Lindsey said his biggest growth has come in maturity, both mentally and physically. He's more intentional with his preparation and care for his body this year.
"Just being more mature," Lindsey said. "Taking care of myself, outside of just practice, taking time to really learn our schemes and our defense. Just taking care of my body too. Definitely got bigger and more flexible."
3. More Love for Pitt's Transfer Defensive Linemen
FitzSimmons has been impressed by the impact of Pitt's transfer additions on the defensive line, noting their growth since the spring.
"I think they're great—Jaeden Moore, Blaine Spires, and Joey Zelinsky," FitzSimmons said. "I think they're great additions to our room. They've been playing great. I think they've improved from the spring too."
4. Overman Praises Young Tight End
Overman, a veteran tight end, sees a bright future for freshman Max Hunt, highlighting his natural talent and work ethic.
"He has a lot of upside," Overman said. "He has a great frame. I think he's continuing to work hard in the weight room and with our dietician staff to put weight on. I think he's great in the route game and he's a real smooth pass catcher."
5. A Special Group
Coach Narduzzi said several Panthers have the potential to be "special" this season, pointing to both established leaders and emerging young talent.
"Who's gonna be special? Man, Kyle Louis is special, Des Reid is special. I think Ryan Baer can be real special… Cruce Brookins is going to be special. Francis Brewu's gonna be special. He's a baby, though… We got a lot of special. But after the season, we'll really find out who's special, right? Then we'll know for sure."
With almost two weeks until kickoff, the Panthers are focused on sharpening execution and fine-tuning competition across the roster. The team returns to the field Saturday before its second scrimmage of camp on Sunday.
