Bub Carrington burst onto the college basketball scene at Pitt in 2023-24 to earn Freshman All-America, ACC All-Rookie Team, and Honorable Mention All-ACC accolades after averaging 13.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game for the Panthers. He opened his career with a triple-double, just the fifth in program history, and jumped up NBA Draft boards throughout the season.
Carrington was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the No. 14 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and promptly traded to his hometown Washington Wizards. The Baltimore, Md., native became Pitt's seventh NBA Draft first round selection and the first draftee directly out of Pitt since 2014 (Lamar Patterson).
His rookie season did not disappoint as Carrington, despite entering the league at just 19 years old, was the only rookie in the NBA to play all 82 games. He finished the season with 43 double-figure scoring games, while averaging 9.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game. He led all NBA rookies in games with at least 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, while also setting a Wizards franchise rookie record with 138 three-point field goals.
Carrington capped off the season with a buzzer beating floater in a 119-118 win over the Miami Heat on the final day of the regular season, but it is where his name is tied for two of the NBA's biggest stars that really stands out.
- joined LeBron James as the only players in NBA history to record 800+ points and 350+ assists before turning the age of 20
- became the second player in NBA history (along with Luka Doncic) to total 800+ points, 300+ assists, 300+ rebounds, and 125+ three-pointers before turning the age of 20
Carrington is a prime candidate for NBA All-Rookie team honors after ranking among the rookie leaders in points (5th - 807), assists (2nd - 364), rebounds (7th - 341), steals (6th - 54), three-pointers (T-1st - 138), and minutes (1st - 2,460).
