CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The Panthers battled early and hung with the top team in the country, but eventually were overpowered by the No. 1 Boston College Eagles and dropped the ACC contest 18-6.
The Pitt defense had a great opening quarter, only allowing two Eagle goals by the top scoring team in the NCAA. Kaitlyn Giandonato started her strong performance with an opening period goal, her 21st of 2025. Goalie Molly Cain also made three saves to help prevent BC from jumping out to a large lead.
Boston College's pressure and offensive prowess started to take effect in the second quarter, seeing the Eagles outscore Pitt 6-2 in the frame. Giandonato assisted her classmate Avery Moon for a goal and Giandonato neeted another herself to see the Panthers enter the locker room down 8-3 but still within striking distance.
Unfortunately for the visitors the momentum by the BC attack continued into the second half, with the hosts scoring four to Pitt's one in the third quarter. It was once again Giandonato finding her way through the Eagles' defense to score, thanks this time to an assist by Moon. The final period of play was another 6-2 goal advantage for Boston College with only Giandonato and leading Panther scorer Jenna Hendrickson tallying goals.
In total, Giandonato recorded a five-point game (4G, 1A), matching her career best mark. Rachel Familetti caused three turnovers to lead the defense and Cain finished the conference clash with 11 saves, the sixth time in her career she has recorded double digit saves in a game. The Eagles were led by an eight-point (5G, 3A) Emma LoPinto game and five goals from the nation's leading scorer Rachel Clark. BC keeper Shea Dolce, who led the NCAA in save percentage heading into today's action, made seven stops while only allowing six goals.
Pitt will need to flush it and move on quickly, as another top-15 ACC team is on deck on the schedule. No. 13 Duke will make the trip to Pittsburgh to face the Panthers April 5 at 12 PM.
