PITTSBURGH – Cross country's Thomas McMahon and wrestling's Dayton Pitzer have been named Pitt's PNC Achievers of the Week for their standout performances over the past week.
McMahon ran a personal best 10k time of 29:43.8 for an 8th place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, punching his ticket to the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships as an automatic qualifier. McMahon was one of just 11 athletes in the field to complete the course in under 30 minutes. McMahon also earned All-Region honors for his top 25 performance at the meet. A native of Columbus, Ohio, McMahon will compete amongst the best in the Cross Country Championships at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Missouri on Nov. 22.
Pitzer sealed the dual against Princeton with a dramatic pin in the final bout, lifting the Panthers to a 20-19 victory over the Tigers at the Fitzgerald Field House Friday night. Pitt trailed 19-9 entering the final two matches after earning just three wins through the first eight bouts. Mac Stout sparked the comeback, posting his fifth technical fall of the season to pull the Panthers within 19-14. That set the stage for Pitzer, who delivered a clutch ending to the Panthers home opener with a pin over Sebastian Garibaldi to complete the 20-19 comeback win for the Panthers.
