Riding a four-game win streak, Pitt (6-2, 4-1 ACC) heads to the West Coast to face Stanford on Saturday for the first time in more than a century. The meeting marks just the fifth all-time between the Panthers and Cardinal and the first since 1922 in Palo Alto. The series is even at 2-2, with the most recent matchup coming in the 2018 Sun Bowl, a narrow 14-13 Stanford win.
The Panthers enter the contest with one of the nation’s hottest offenses, fresh off a 53-34 victory over NC State—their first win over the Wolfpack since 2001. Freshman quarterback Mason Heintschel set Pitt’s single-game freshman passing record with 423 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first ACC freshman in 30 years to eclipse 400 yards and three scores in a game. Since taking over as starter, Heintschel has led Pitt to a perfect 4-0 mark while ranking second nationally in passing yards during that span.
Pitt’s special teams and receiving corps also made headlines last week. Kicker Trey Butkowski connected on four field goals and five PATs, extending his streak of consecutive makes to 16, while wideout Blue Hicks hauled in a career-best 120 yards—including an 84-yard touchdown, tied for the fourth-longest in school history. The Panthers totaled 529 yards and 29 first downs without allowing a sack, underscoring a balanced attack that continues to surge heading into November.
