DALLAS, TX – The Pitt women swept the weekend and improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 1985-86 season. The men would also go on and best Utah as Pitt swept an opponent for the fourth time this season.
Pitt's women have started a season 7-0 or better only three times in program history. The Panthers finished all three of those seasons undefeated.
The Panthers won 12 events on Saturday, including a first-place finish in the men's 1m diving competition from Cameron Cash. The reigning ACC Men's Diver of the Year has now won three out of his last four events. Pitt had two podium finishes on the 3m event as well, as Cash would finish second in the men's 3m and Mariana Osorio Mendoza would place third in the women's 3m.
Pitt caught fire out of the gate as both the men and women took the first relays of the day. The Panther women went 1-2 in the 200 Medley Relay as Claire Jansen, Jessica Strong, Sophie Yendell and Anna Wiechertjes claimed first with a 1:37.90. The team of Sydney Gring, Angelina Messina, Avery Kudlac and Mary Clarke finished in a close second for Pitt.
The men's relay team of Krzysztof Radziszewski, Eli Hobson, Neil Mortimer and Donat Fabian took first place with their 1:25.30 in the 200 Medley Relay.
Sophie Yendell earned two individual and one relay victory this afternoon. Yendell almost broke her own school record in the Women's 50 Freestyle as she swam a 21.96 (School record: 21.83). The fifth year senior would also claim first in the 100 Butterfly (52.28).
Freshmen Julian Koch and Eli Hobson continue to shine as they combined for three individual victories and one relay victory. Julian Koch placed first in Men's 100 Free and 100 Butterfly while Hobson took home the Men's 100 Breaststroke and 200 Medley Relay. Koch and Hobson have each won at least one event for the second-consecutive meet.
Junior Claire Jansen earned another victory in the Women's 100 Back with her 53.15 and took second in the Women's 200 Back. Jansen also helped the women win the 200 Medley Relay to start the meet.
Sydney Gring won the Women's 200 Butterfly (1:58.23) and finished in a close second to Yendell in the 100 Butterfly (52.51).
Max Matteazzi took first in the Men's 200 Breaststroke (1:58.01) and second in the 200 IM. Pitt's school record holder in the Men's 200 Freestyle, Marcin Goraj, claimed first yet again in that event with his 1:37.51 on Saturday.
The Panthers return to the pool next Saturday, February 1st when they host Ohio State at Trees Pool for their senior day meet. Diving will start at 10:15 AM with swimming estimated to begin around 12:15 PM.
