PITTSBURGH – Pitt lacrosse student-athletes Jill Fenech and Abby Thorne have been named captains for the approaching 2025 season, as announced by Head Coach Emily Boissonneault Monday morning.
Fenech and Thorne will be competing in their fourth seasons in the blue and gold and are returning captains. Fenech is now a two-year team captain, while Thorne has led the Panthers for three seasons.
"Among a team of incredible leaders, we are proud to announce Jill and Abby as our captains for the 2025 season," said Boissonneault. "These two are relentless on the field, selfless aiding others and are committed to helping us reach our goals. As returning captains they are well prepared to lead and represent the young women of our program. We thank them for their continued leadership and look forward to what we can accomplish together."
"Being named again as a captain is such an honor," said Fenech. "I've been so fortunate to learn from past captains and all of my teammates, and I am excited to bring my energy and work ethic into the upcoming season. This team is a family, and we have built something truly special here at Pitt. I'm thankful for my time here and can't wait to make this our best season yet. Hail To Pitt!"
Fenech started each of the 18 games in 2024, scoring six goals while adding two assists, 16 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and 74 draw controls. The senior is the Panthers all-time leader in draw controls with 197 and the single-season leader with 74.
"Being named a captain for my final season is an honor that means so much to me," said Thorne. "I'm incredibly grateful for the trust my teammates and coaches have placed in me and for the opportunity to help guide this team one last time. This year, I'm focused on giving everything I have to my teammates, coaches and this program, leaving a legacy that we can all be proud of. Our team is more driven than ever, committed to fine tuning every moment to reach our potential. I'm especially thankful for my co-captain, Jill, and her leadership and our ability to work together is invaluable. Together, we're determined to make this season one to remember."
Thorne spent 2024 as the leader of the defense once again for Pitt, starting all 18 games and recording 19 ground balls, 11 caused turnovers and one draw control.
The 2025 Pitt Panthers return 29 student-athletes and have added nine newcomers to form team four. The Panthers will open the season on February 8 at St. Bonaventure.
