PITTSBURGH – Wrestling's Mac Stout and Women's Basketball's Mikayla Johnson were named PNC Achievers of the Week following a pair of strong performances.
No. 12 Mac Stout picked up two major decision wins to help lead the Panthers to a dominant weekend and extended his winning streak to 11 consecutive matches. The Panthers picked two ranked wins over over No. 15 Stanford and No. 22 West Virginia. In a close match with Stanford, Stout defeated No. 24 Nick Stemmet by a 10-1 major decision to give the Panthers a 21-15 lead heading into the final bout of the dual.
The Panthers traveled to No. 22 West Virginia about 40 hours later and came back from an 11-0 deficit to defeat the Mountaineers 25-17. Trailing by four points heading into the final two bouts of the match, Stout gave the Panthers the lead with a 13-3 major decision win over Ian Bush.
Redshirt sophomore guard Mikayla Johnson recorded a career-high 22 points and six rebounds as Pitt completed the largest regulation comeback win in NCAA women's basketball history with its 72-59 victory over SMU on Sunday. Sparked by Johnson's performance, the Panthers rallied from a 32-point second quarter deficit to stun the Mustangs. Defensively, Johnson anchored the Panthers' defense as they held SMU scoreless in the third period, while outscoring the Mustangs, 28-0.
