
No. 3 Pitt Drops Road Battle to Penn

PHILADELPHIA – Playing its second match in three days, the No. 3-ranked Pitt men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Penn Sunday evening at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia.
The loss marked the Panthers' (3-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) first of the 2024 campaign and their first to an Ivy League opponent since falling 3-2 to Harvard in 2015.
Penn (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Ivy) took a 1-0 lead just before the halftime break, as Jack Wagoner fired a strike from the right wing in the 41st minute.
Despite facing its second halftime deficit in as many matches, Pitt began to control the tempo in the second frame.
The Panthers came away with several quality chances over the final 45 minutes of action but were unable to find the equalizer, dropping their first match of the 2024 season.
Of note, Pitt controlled possession 65 percent for the contest, while earning 13 corners compared to only four for the Quakers.
How It Happened
- Penn fired two shots in the opening 12 minutes of action, with both being saved by sophomore goalkeeper Jack Moxom.
- Neither side created quality chances as the ensuing eight minutes of play featured zero shot attempts.
- Moxom earned his third save of the contest in the 21st minute, while earning his fourth in the 24th minute.
- Pitt's first shot came at the 25:00 minute mark from Lasse Dahl.
- His attempt sailed off target.
- The two teams exchanged shots over the ensuing 15 minutes of play, but neither side broke the deadlock.
- Penn took a 1-0 lead in the 41st minute on a goal from Jack Wagoner.
- Pitt stepped up its intensity to open the second half, controlling possession for nearly 10-consecutive minutes.
- The Panthers' first shot of the frame came from Miguel Bertran in the 49th minute.
- Pitt continued to possess the ball in the final third for the following 25 minutes of action.
- Casper Svendby nearly found the equalizer in the 78th minute but his shot was saved by Penn's keeper
- Seconds later, Felipe Mercado had a near scoring opportunity that sailed just off target.
- Pitt remained on the attack, but Penn held on defensively to secure the 1-0 victory.
