PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Panthers men's and women's cross country teams released their 2024 schedule Tuesday afternoon, as announced by Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country, Alonzo Webb and Cross Country Head Coach, Griff Graves.
The squads will begin with their annual home meet, the Panther Opener, at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh on Friday, August 30th. The men's 5K is scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. with the women's 5K starting shortly thereafter at 9:15 a.m. Both races will start near the Schenley Park Sports Complex. Admission is free to all fans.
Two weeks later, the Panthers will head east to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational on Friday, September 13th. The start times are TBA. At this meet a year prior, the men's team took second place and the women's team finished in third place.
In October, Pitt will remain in the Keystone State as the teams travel to Lehigh for the 50th Paul Short Run held at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course on Saturday, October 5th.
The Panthers make their first trip out of state on October 19th for Wisconsin Pre-Nationals, a precursor to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country National Championships, scheduled for a little over a month later on November 23rd. Both races will be conducted at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
Wisconsin Pre-Nationals serve as the last regular season meet before the post season commences with ACC Cross Country Championships on November 1st hosted by conference partner, NC State at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Last season, the men's group finished in 9th place overall and the women's team tallied 12th place.
Pitt will return to Penn State for the second time of the 2024 season on November 15th for NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships, where the Panthers will be vying to finish in the top two as a team to secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The first four regional individual finishers, not from an automatic qualifying or at-large team, will also earn a bid to the championship meet.
