PITTSBURGH – Rising junior Jorge Diaz Graham will be sidelined for an estimated eight weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a core muscle injury Friday afternoon. He has been injury plagued over the past year missing most of last summer with a foot injury and playing in just 16 games before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery Feb. 8.
"The injury is a small setback for Jorge, but we are confident that he will make a full recovery," said head coach Jeff Capel. "Jorge will work hard with our training staff during the recovery process and we expect him to be ready to continue his on-court development later this summer. It is an unfortunate injury, but Jorge has been through this before and will attack the recovery process with a great attitude."
Diaz Graham is averaging 3.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 9.6 minutes per game over 47 career contests. He had a career-high 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field, including 3-of-3 from three-point range, in a season opening win over NC A&T last year.
Pitt also returns four of its top six scorers from a year ago with the backcourt of Ishmael Leggett and Jaland Lowe leading the way. Leggett averaged 12.3 points, while leading the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg.) and steals (41) en route to earning ACC Sixth Man of the Year honors. Lowe came on strong over the final three months of the season averaging 12.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in ACC play.
The Panthers have added transfers Damian Dunn (Houston) and Cameron Corhen (Florida State) along with highly touted prospects Brandin Cummings, Amsal Delalic, and Amdy Ndiaye.
