PITTSBURGH – Blake Hinson is set to join an elite group of Pitt men's basketball players Monday morning when the engraved stone donning his moniker is placed on Pitt's Varsity Walk. Hinson, a recipient of the 2024 Panther Award, becomes the 23rd Pitt men's basketball player to be recognized on the Varsity Walk.
Hinson averaged 18.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game, while scoring 20 or more points 15 times and making a school record 110 three-point field goals, in leading Pitt to a 22-11 record (12-8 ACC), fourth-place league finish, and an ACC Tournament Semifinal appearance in 2023-24. He shot a career-best 42.1 percent from three-point range and finished tied for 11th in the ACC record books in three-point field goals. Hinson holds three of the top seven games in program history for most threes, including a school record nine three-pointers in wins over West Virginia and Louisville this season. His 41-point outburst against Louisville is tied for the third most points in a game by a Panther and is a Pitt Petersen Events Center record. He earned First Team All-ACC and NABC All-District 2 Second Team honors in his final season at Pitt.
Hinson left his mark in just two seasons at Pitt, becoming the fourth fastest player to 1,000 career points (61 games), while totaling 1,159 points (16.8 ppg.), 363 rebounds (5.3 rpg.), and 207 three-point field goals in 69 total games. He finished his Pitt career ranked 30th in scoring and seventh in three-point field goals, and sixth in three-point percentage (.401). Hinson also set a school record for threes per game (3.0 3pg.). He joined Michael Young (2016, 2017) as the only Panthers to garner All-ACC accolades in multiple seasons.
Pitt's Varsity Walk is a tradition that celebrates the achievements and dedication of our student-athletes. Stretching across the heart of campus, this vibrant pathway is adorned with engraved stone commemorating the names and accomplishments of those student-athletes honored with the Blue and Gold or Panther awards.
The Blue-Gold award is presented to the male and female senior student-athlete who best represents the student-athlete "ideal" based on academic scholarship, athletic achievement, leadership qualities and citizenship while the Panther Award is presented to the male and female senior student-athlete who has promoted Pittsburgh Athletics through his or her outstanding athletic achievement.
As you stroll along the walk, you can feel the energy and pride that emanates from the etched names, representing the countless hours of hard work, teamwork, and passion poured into Pitt's athletic programs. It serves as a reminder of the university's rich athletic history and the profound impact that sports have on the campus community.
