PITTSBURGH – Pitt's roster for the 2024-25 season continues to take shape with the recent signing of 6-5 guard Damian Dunn. The veteran from Kinston, N.C., spent last season at Houston after beginning his collegiate career at Temple.
"Damian is an experienced guard with the ability to really score the ball," said head coach Jeff Capel. "He is highly competitive with a big frame to get to his spots on offense as well as guard multiple positions on the other end of the floor. We targeted him early in the transfer process and are excited to have him join our program. I really like how our backcourt is coming together with the return of Ish and Jaland as well as the additions of Damian and Brandin [Cummings]."
Dunn has totaled 1,288 points, 373 rebounds, and 191 assists in 109 career games. He scored in double figures in each of his final three seasons at Temple before playing last season at Houston. Dunn averaged 6.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 17.5 minutes per game in helping the Cougars to a 32-5 record, Big 12 regular season title, No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and Sweet Sixteen appearance.
A two-time All-AAC selection and eight-time The American Honor Roll pick at Temple, Dunn finished 11th in the conference in scoring (15.4 ppg.) and ninth in free throw percentage (.816 – 146-of-179) as a redshirt junior. He scored in double figures 22 times with eight games of 20 or more points., including a career-high 38 points (13-of-18 FG, 7-of-9 3PT, 5-of-6 free throws) against Vanderbilt.
Dunn led the Owls in scoring (14.9 ppg/t-6th AAC) and free throw percentage (121-of-145, .834/5th AAC), while ranking third in steals (25) and rebounding (4.2 rpg) in 2021-22. He scored in double figures in 20 games, including a 33-point effort with a game-winning buzzer-beater from three in a win over East Carolina. Dunn garnered Second Team All-AAC and NABC All-District accolades as a sophomore.
Dunn was also a member of the AAC All-Freshman Team and a two-time Freshman of the Week selection during the 2020-21 campaign. He closed the year 10th in the AAC in scoring at 13.5 points per game, while ranking in the top 10 national in free throws made (6.1) and free throw attempts (7.9). Dunn played in just one games as a true freshman in 2019-20 after suffering a foot injury in the preseason and reinjuring the foot in his first game back.
Pitt is expected to return four of its top six scorers from a year ago with the backcourt of Ishmael Leggett and Jaland Lowe leading the way. Leggett averaged 12.3 points, while leading the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg.) and steals (41) en route to earning ACC Sixth Man of the Year honors. Lowe came on strong over the final three months of the season averaging 12.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in ACC play.
