PITTSBURGH—Two members of the Pitt wrestling team were recently recognized as members of the 2023-24 NWCA Scholar All-American Team: sophomore Luca Augustine and freshman Finn Solomon.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) honored Augustine for the second straight season and awarded Solomon for the first time after his strong redshirt freshman campaign.
Both Panthers named 2024 NWCA Scholar All-Americans qualified for and won a match at the recent 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Kansas City.
Augustine, a 174-pounder from Waynesburg, Pa., went 15-8 in his second season as Pitt's starter in the weight class and defeated Cornell's Benny Baker at NCAAs. A biology major, Augustine has produced several 4.0 semesters during his three years of studies at the University of Pittsburgh and owns an outstanding GPA of 3.92 as he plans to pursue a career in the medical field.
Solomon transferred to Pitt after one year at NC State, returning home and earning the starting job at 149 pounds for the Panthers as a redshirt freshman. He posted a 19-12 record, earned a bronze medal at the 2024 ACC Championship and upset Central Michigan's Corbyn Munson at NCAAs – all while producing a 3.41 GPA in his first year at the University of Pittsburgh.
Under head coach Keith Gavin, Pitt has now produced 13 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, all since 2020, with five straight seasons of multiple Panthers earning the prestigious recognition.
Pitt qualified seven for the 2024 NCAA Championships, with each winning at least one match in Kansas City and helping the team finish 26th. It was the first time in a decade that the Panthers produced seven individuals who won at least one match at the national tournament.
