Pitt Rips off 90-65 Road Win at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pitt matched a season high with 16 three-pointers and shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from beyond the arc en route to a 90-65 win over Boston College at Conte Forum Saturday evening. Carlton Carrington scored a season-high 27 points and matched a Pitt freshman record with seven three-point field goals, while Blake Hinson added 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting (3-of-4 3FG) as Pitt improved to 19-10 overall and 10-8 in the ACC.
Jaland Lowe delivered an outstanding performance with 12 points, six rebounds, a season-high nine assists, and two steals as the Panthers recorded 20 assists with just five turnovers on the night.
The Panthers jumped out to a 17-9 lead at the first media timeout as Pitt made five of its first six three-point attempts including a pair from Carrington.
Boston College climbed back in the contest and got within two points with a 9-0 run after Hinson went to the bench with a second foul. Pitt responded with a 12-2 run as Guillermo Diaz Graham got things going with a three from the top of the key and capped it off with another three from the right wing to give the Panthers a 35-23 lead with 6:18 left before halftime.
Pitt closed the half with a 47-32 advantage as the freshman guard tandem of Carrington and Lowe combined for 17 points and eight assists. Hinson scored nine points on 2-of-2 shooting from three-point range and a three-point play before sitting the final 12 minutes of the half.
Both teams started slow in the second half going a combined 4-of-17 from the field in the opening six minutes. The Panthers entered the first media timeout leading 53-37 after Lowe and Zack Austin hit threes for Pitt's two field goals during that span.
Pitt pushed out to a 24-point lead with an 8-0 run as Carrington found Federiko Federiko in the lane for a dunk before hitting his third three of the game on the next trip down the court. Hinson added a three off a drive and kick from Ishmael Leggett to give the Panthers a 69-45 lead with 9:11 remaining.
The Panthers continued to pour it on down the stretch as Carrington hit three threes in a span of 2:03 and Pitt led by as much as 32 when he hit a pull-up jumper with 1:51 remaining in the contest.
Carrington scored a season-best 27 points to go along with four rebounds, and five assists. He was 10-of-18 from the field, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. He went 5-of-6 from three-point range (making his first five threes) and had 17 points in the second half of play.
Quinton Post finished with 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Boston College. Pitt held the Eagles backcourt tandem of Claudell Harris, Jr. and Mason Madson to seven points on 3-of-15 shooting from the field.
ACC HIGHS
Pitt set ACC season high for points (90), three-point field goals (16), three-point percentage (.533), field goals (33), and field goal percentage (.541). The Panthers' 20 assists were also the second most in ACC play and the fifth time this season they have dished out 20 or more assists in a game.
THREE-POINT PROWESS
Pitt continued its ACC-leading three-point offense, finishing 16-of-30 from beyond the arc for its 14th game with 10 or more threes. Five different players made two or more threes in the game with Carrington leading the way with seven. The Panthers were 8-of-14 (.571) from beyond the arc in the second half of play.
POST TANDEM
Guillermo Diaz Graham and Federiko Federiko each scored eight points in the contest with Federiko adding six rebounds and two blocked shots. The tandem played extended minutes together for the first time this season with Hinson saddled with two fouls in the opening half.
FIRST HALF ATTACK
Pitt's 47 points in the opening half were the most in ACC play this season. The Panthers shot 54.8 percent (17-of-31) from the field, including 50.0 percent (8-of-16) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes of action.
ROAD WARRIORS
Pitt is tied for first in the NCAA among Power 6 conference (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East, SEC, Pac 12) teams with seven road wins this season. North Carolina (ACC), South Carolina (SEC), and Creighton (Big East) are the only other Power 6 schools that have seven road wins.
