CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Devin Nugent was selected as the ACC Men's Track Athlete of the Week and Ilse Steigenga was selected as the ACC Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday evening.
Nugent and Steigenga won their respective events, the men's 400m hurdles and the women's long jump, on the opening day of the USF Alumni Invitational this past weekend in Tampa, Fla. Nugent crossed the finish line in 51.09 seconds to secure the victory in the first outdoor competition of the season. The sophomore came just shy of breaking his own personal record and fourth best program time of 51.07 recorded during his freshman season. Nugent's time currently stands atop the ACC and is tied for fourth in the country. The Abington, Pa. native was also instrumental as the anchor in the men's 4x400 relay. Pitt finished second at the meet and recorded the seventh-best time in program history, 3:07.25.
Steigenga, a senior from the Netherlands, leaped 6.25m on her final attempt to take the gold in the women's long jump. After the season's opening weekend, Steigenga leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally.
Nugent, Steigenga and the Panthers will be back in action at Texas Relays in Austin, TX March 27-30. The distance group will travel to NC State for Raleigh Relays March 28-30.
