PITTSBURGH – Carlton Carrington was named ACC Rookie of the Week for a league leading fifth time after guiding Pitt to a pair of wins over Florida State and NC State. The Baltimore, Md., native averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game as the Panthers improved to 21-10 overall and 12-8 in the ACC.
Carrington closed out the regular season with a 23-point, 5-rebound, 6-assist effort in a win over NC State. He went 8-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, in 39 minutes of action. Carrington totaled 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field (4-of-7 3FG) in the second half of play.
Earlier in the week, Carrington posted 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists against the Seminoles.
He enters postseason play with 22 double-figure scoring games, including four games with 20 or more points, and is the only freshman in the country averaging at least 13.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. Only 15 freshmen have reached those totals since the 1992-93 season with 10 of those 15 players going on to become NBA First Round Draft Picks.
Carrington joins Chris Taft (2003-04) as the only Panthers to garner conference rookie of the week honors five or more times in a season.
Pitt earned a double-bye as the four-seed in this week's ACC Tournament. The Panthers return to action Thursday, March 14 (2:30 p.m.) against the winner of Wednesday's second round game between Wake Forest and either Notre Dame or Georgia Tech.
