Panthers Secure Highest Relay Finish in Pitt’s ACC History; Pitt Breaks Two Records on Day Two of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Pittsburgh men's and women's swimming and diving teams sent seven swimmers to the finals – breaking two school records on the second day of the ACC Championships, Wednesday evening.
Sophie Yendell broke her own record in the 50 Free and the women's 200 free relay secured the highest finish in Pitt's ACC history after placing fifth overall tonight.
Prelims
Pitt posted strong swims during the second day of the ACC Championships – placing seven Panthers in the finals. The Panthers saw eight of their swimmers post best times in the preliminary rounds in the morning session. Guy Frimis and Michal Piela each secured a spot in the C Final of the 500 Free after clocking prelim times of 4:23.35 and 4:24.62, respectively.
Freshman Sydney Gring claimed her spot in the B Final of the 200 IM after finishing in 16th place with a time of 1:58.61. Max Matteazzi earned a spot in the men's 200 IM C Final after clocking in at 1:45.13. Three Panthers across the men's and women's teams posted best times in the 200 IM this morning.
Pitt placed three Panthers in the finals for the 50 free. Yendell clocked in just a hundredth of a second off from her best time and school record – finishing with a 21.90 to secure a spot in the A Final. On the men's side, Stepan Goncharov earned a spot in the B Final for the 50 Free after finishing in 10th place (19.30). Fifth year Dominic Toledo tabbed his place in the C Final with his time of 19.86.
The Panthers had three divers score big points towards the team total in the women's 1-meter prelims. Megan Iannon secured 19th place with her 230.20 total score. Jess Vega was right behind her, placing 20th overall. Rachel Dickerson scored points for Pitt as well after claiming 24th place with her total of 224.70.
Finals
The Panthers started the evening off breaking records yet again. The women's 200 free relay comprised of Yendell, Claire Jansen, Gring and Avery Kudlac broke the school record with their time of 1:29.09 finishing in fifth place overall.
In the men's 500 free finals, Piela and Frimis each posted strong swims – finishing in 17th and 18th place, respectively. Piela clocked in at 4:21.32 and Frimis finished with a time of 4:21.76.
Freshman Gring secured 13th place overall in the women's 200 IM with her time of 1:58.60. On the men's side, Matteazzi secured 18th place – clocking in at 1:44.20.
Pitt closed off the evening with strong dives in the 50 free finals. Yendell crushed her own school record with her time of 21.83 – finishing in eighth place overall. Goncharov secured tenth place in the men's 50 free after posting a time of 19.32.
UP NEXT
Pitt will return to the Greensboro Aquatic Center tomorrow for day three of the ACC Championships. The preliminary rounds will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with the finals slated for 5:30 p.m.
