PITTSBURGH—Pitt junior running back Desmond Reid, who ranks second nationally in all-purpose yards with an average of 182.6 per game, has been named to The Sporting News Midseason All-America Team.
This is the latest accolade for the dynamic Reid, who earlier this week was named to The Athletic Midseason All-America Team and added to the watch list for the prestigious Maxwell Award, presented to the college player of the year. He additionally was lauded by Associated Press as the ACC's "most surprising player" at the season's midpoint.
A 2023 FCS All-American at Western Carolina, Reid has quickly established himself as one of the most electric offensive talents at the FBS level. He has scored eight touchdowns three different ways: rushing (three), receiving (four) and in the return game (one).
Described by ESPN's Sam Acho as "a walking big play," Reid has scored TDs via a 78-yard punt return, 72-yard run and 56-yard reception.
On the season, Reid leads Pitt in all-purpose yards (913), rushing yards (494), total touchdowns and receiving touchdowns. He has been a catalyst for a Pitt offense that is averaging 481.3 yards (11th in FBS) and 40.8 points (13th) per game.
Reid has three 100-yard rushing games and two 100-yard receiving efforts this season, the first time a Pitt running back has achieved that feat.
Reid helped fuel Pitt's furious rally at Cincinnati (Sept. 7) with a historic performance, rushing for 148 yards on 19 carries (7.8 avg.) and catching six passes for 106 yards (17.7 avg.) and a TD. He became the first Pitt player on record to compile 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game.
Reid has helped the Panthers achieve their first 6-0 start since 1982. The Panthers are ranked No. 20 by both Associated Press and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
Following an open date this week, the Panthers resume action on Thursday, Oct. 24, when they host ACC foe Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN. For tickets, go to PittsburghPanthers.com or call (800) 643-7488.
