PITTSBURGH—Pitt running back Desmond Reid has been named a candidate for the prestigious Maxwell Award, presented annually to the College Player of the Year since 1937. The award watch list was unveiled today by the Maxwell Football Club.
Reid (Miami Gardens, Fla./Miramar) has been one of the driving forces behind Pitt's first 6-0 start in 42 years. Western Carolina transfer, he leads the team in rushing yards (494), all-purpose yards (913), receiving touchdowns (tied with four) and total touchdowns (eight). Additionally, Reid ranks second nationally in all-purpose yards (ACC-best 182.6 per game).
Reid has produced multiple firsts for the Panthers this season, including a tally of 100 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the same game (at Cincinnati) and catching 11 passes for 155 yards at North Carolina, the most by a running back in program history.
In Pitt's 17-15 win over Cal last week, he ran for both Pitt touchdowns—including a career-long 72-yard sprint—and netted 120 yards on 16 carries (7.5 avg.).
Reid, who was also named a Midseason All-American by The Athletic, is one of 17 candidates for the award. For more information, go to www.maxwellfootballclub.org.
Following an open date this week, the Panthers resume action on Thursday, Oct. 24, when they host ACC foe Syracuse at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised by ESPN. For tickets, go to PittsburghPanthers.com or call (800) 643-7488.
