PITTSBURGH - Foluke Olujide-Ajibade of Women's Track & Field and Wrestling's Cole Matthews were named the PNC Achievers of the Week following big weekends from both individuals.
At the Penn State National Open this past weekend, senior Foluke Olujide-Ajibade broke the women's weight throw school record with a throw of 21.35m. The record was previously held by Amanda Walker and had stood since 2005 when Walker threw for 21.12m in the event. Olujide-Ajibade had been approaching the record in every meet she competed in this season. Her previous personal best was 21.07m, which occurred just two weeks prior, also at Penn State. Olujide-Ajibade's mark currently sits at third best in the ACC and 17th in the country.
Cole Matthews earned his second win over a top-five opponent this season on Friday night at the Fitzgerald Field House, coming from behind to defeat No. 4 Ryan Jack of NC State in a thrilling 15-10 decision. The sixth-year 141-pounder from Greenville, Pa. improved to 5-0 against Jack, although this was by far the highest scoring of those bouts after Pitt's captain registered four takedowns against the Wolfpack's two-time NCAA qualifier. Matthews is 9-1 in his career against the top-six ranked wrestlers in his weight class based on the most recent InterMat national polls, with the only defeat coming in the final seconds of tiebreakers. He was named Co-ACC Wrestler of the Week for his performance, earning the fourth weekly ACC recognition of his career.
