PITTSBURGH—The No. 15 Pitt wrestling team fell to No. 24 Arizona State, 21-20, on criteria on Sunday afternoon at the Fitzgerald Field House in the most disappointing way.
The Panthers (7-5) appeared to be in a great position to win the dual after earning bonus-point victories in three consecutive matches at 174, 184 and 197 pounds to take a 20-14 lead.
However, shoulder injury to heavyweight Dayton Pitzer in the final minute of his thrilling bout against former NCAA runner-up Cohlton Schultz handed the Sun Devils (3-4) the win in the dual on the second criteria tiebreaker after the total points finished level at 20.
"That was the worst possible outcome to end that dual," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "Some guys performed well and scored a lot of points for us, and we still need more from a few others. But Dayton's health is at the forefront of my mind right now."
Both teams won five bouts in the dual, with four of the Panthers' wins coming via bonus points.
No. 27 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds, No. 15 Luca Augustine at 174 and No. 13 Mac Stout at 197 all triumphed via major decision. No. 12 Reece Heller won by technical fall at 184 to give Pitt a lead with two bouts remaining, while No. 20 Vinnie Santaniello also earned a win for the Panthers at 133.
