PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh men's soccer head coach Jay Vidovich announced on Tuesday afternoon the additions of Josh Oldroyd and Zack Schilawski to his staff for the upcoming 2023 campaign.
"I'm excited about the additions of Josh and Zack to our staff," stated Vidovich. "They're not only well respected in the college soccer industry, but they are known to be even better people who will help us continue to raise the bar for Pitt men's soccer moving forward."
Oldroyd comes to Pittsburgh following five successful seasons as assistant coach at the University of Kentucky where he worked with the Wildcats' goalkeepers. Under his tutelage, Kentucky goalkeepers earned All-America honors in three of his five seasons overall while his group allowed just 75 goals in 105 games played (0.71 goals-against average). The Wildcats posted a team goals-against average under 1.00 GAA in all five seasons with Oldroyd in charge of the keepers.
"Josh is a brilliant soccer mind who is going to make an immediate impact on our program," said Vidovich. "He has gained loads of knowledge at each of his previous stops working for several highly respected head coaches. I've seen the impact he made on the defensive unit at Kentucky over the years and I'm excited to see the new heights he will achieve here at Pitt."
The 2022 campaign was another impressive year for the Wildcats as they posted a 15-1-5 overall record while going 5-0-3 in Sun Belt Conference games while earning their first Sun Belt Tournament title and earning the No. 1 overall seed for the NCAA Tournament. After advancing to their third straight NCAA Championship Sweet 16, the Wildcats fell 2-1 to Pitt for their lone loss of the season.
Under Oldroyd's tutelage, true freshman goalkeeper Casper Mols put together one of the best seasons between the pipes in program history as he earned First Team All-America honors to go along with Sun Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and All-Sun Belt Conference Tournament team. The Aabernaa, Denmark native finished off his first season with a 11-1-4 overall record, a 0.76 goals-against average, .700 save percentage and seven shutouts. Overall during the 2022 season, the Wildcats goalkeepers allowed just 16 goals across 21 games.
In his first season at Kentucky in 2018, Oldroyd was part of UK's United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region Staff of the Year as the Wildcats marched to one of the most historic seasons in program history. The Wildcats enjoyed a record-setting fall that year, winning both the C-USA regular season and tournament title, setting the school record for wins (19), reaching the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, going 5-1 against top-25 opponents, and welcoming multiple 3,000-plus crowds to The Bell.
Oldroyd helped goalkeeper Enrique Facusse earn United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-America, First Team All-Region and First Team All-C-USA honors after posting a 19-2-0 overall record with a 0.49 goals-against average and 14 shutouts. Facusse's 14 shutouts led the nation while his 0.49 goals-against average ranked fourth nationally and his .840 save percentage ranked 12th in Division I.
Prior to Kentucky, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Evansville where the Purple Aces went a combined 21-16-5. His main duties involved training the team's goalkeepers as well as working with the overall defensive strategy and scouting.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Oldroyd enjoyed a stellar playing career at Bryan College in the NAIA. The Leeds, England, native was a three-time all-league honoree, capping his senior season with the Appalachian Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award. During his time with the Lions, he helped the team claim both a regular season and tournament crown.
Before his move to the United States, Oldroyd spent time with Altofts FC in West Yorkshire, England, and played a part in the club's U19 squad lifting the Northern Alliance Premier League title in 2011. He also competed with the Leeds United FC academy as well as with NEW College Pontefract.
Schilawski is a familiar face to Vidovich as he played for the Panthers' bench boss for four standout seasons at Wake Forest from 2006-10 including netting the game-winning goal for the Demon Deacons in the 2007 National Championship game.
"Zack is a familiar face for me and I'm excited about adding him to our staff," said Vidovich. "He brings amazing relationship and leadership qualities with him to Pitt. Zack was a great player, student and person during his successful collegiate and professional careers. A proven leader, I can't wait to see the impact he makes on our program."
Schilawski comes to Pittsburgh after spending the past two seasons at UNC Wilmington where he helped the Seahawks post a 6-4-7 overall record in 2022 and finished second in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 5-1-3 showing. The Seahawks played CAA regular season champion Elon to a scoreless draw in the regular season finale to clinch the CAA Tournament's no. 2 seed along with hosting rights to the tournament's opening week.
Under his tutelage last season, Bachir Ndiaye earned First Team All-CAA and First Team All-Atlantic Region honors while becoming just the fifth UNCW player to be drafted in the MLS SuperDraft as he was selected by Inter Miami FC in the second round (47th overall). He also helped Jalen Anderson earn Second Team All-CAA honors and Third Team All-Atlantic Region honors after leading the squad with five goals.
In his first season at UNCW in 2021, the Seahawks authored a 9-6-2 record, including a 4-3-1 mark in the CAA. The Seahawks downed No. 15 James Madison by a 1-0 result and earned a victory over Atlantic Coast Conference opponent North Carolina.
Schilawski, a Cary, NC native, joined the Seahawks after serving as an assistant coach at the University of Denver for one season. The Pioneers, who authored a 6-2 record during the spring 2021 season, captured the Summit League regular season title and placed six student-athletes on the All-Summit League Teams, including three First-Team selections.
Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Schilawski graduated from law school at the University of North Carolina School of Law. In 2017, he was admitted to practice law in North Carolina. He focused his practice on all aspects of North Carolina family law litigation and negotiation with the Wake Family Law Group.
A 2010 graduate of Wake Forest, Schilawski appeared in a program-record 99 career matches for the Demon Deacons with 42 starts. He stands as one of four players in Wake Forest history to record 100 or more career points after registering 40 goals with 20 assists.
Schilawski netted 15 game-winning goals during his All-American career, including the title-winning tally against Ohio State in the 2007 NCAA Division I Championship Game. He earned Third-Team All-America plaudits from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as a senior in 2009 after leading the Atlantic Coast Conference with 14 goals and 35 points.
In addition to his talents on the field, Schilawski earned First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-America® honors during his junior and senior seasons. He also claimed a spot on the NSCAA/adidas Men's College Scholar All-America First Team and was a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in 2009.
Following his outstanding collegiate career, he was the ninth overall pick in the 2010 Major League Soccer SuperDraft, starting 28-of-50 games in two seasons with the New England Revolution. He ranked second on the team with five goals during his rookie campaign in 2010 and became the first rookie in MLS history to register a hat trick in his home debut when he struck for three goals in the first half against Toronto on Apr. 10, 2010.
