PITTSBURGH – The Panthers delivered yet another successful week of competition headlined by a series sweep of California by Pitt baseball and multiple event winners from the track and field program at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. By week's end, Ilse Steigenga from track and field along with baseball's Logan Evans have earned PNC Achiever of the Week status.
Steigenga, a junior from Exmorra, The Netherlands, has earned the recognition for the second week in a row for recording a new career-best in the outdoor long jump over the weekend. She posted a 6.47m jump to win the women's long jump event. Her jump is tied for the second-best outdoor long jump in program history and the best in the last 26 years of Pitt Track & Field, one week after setting her previous personal best of 6.30m. She now holds the 2nd furthest long jump in the ACC this season and ranks 11th in the nation with only one weekend remaining before the ACC Championships in Raleigh, N.C.
Evans delivered a record-breaking performance on the mound in Saturday's series clinching win over California. The Saline, Mich. native posted a career-best 10 strikeouts over 6.1 innings to lead the Panthers to a 5-3 win over the Golden Bears at Charles L. Cost Field. Evans gave up only two runs in the start to notch his third win of the year. The right-hander has now thrown into the sixth inning in three of his five starts this season.
