PITTSBURGH – Pitt junior Sophie Yendell became the second fastest British swimmer in the 50 fly of all time after winning the event with a time of 26.16 at the 2023 British World Championships at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, England. This is the highest finish for Yendell at the British Championships as she has finished in second place in previous years.
"This is a huge moment for Sophie and the University of Pittsburgh Swimming & Diving program," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "To have a swimmer win any national championship is a big deal, but Great Britain historically has one of the strongest swimming traditions in the world. In addition, posting a top 10 time in the world is a massive accomplishment. Sophie has put in a tremendous amount of work over the last year to get to this point. She is an example of someone who has bought in at every step of the way with the new coaching staff, trusted the process and is now seeing the results. Our whole team is incredibly proud of her and are celebrating this moment with her."
The Tamworth, England product had a standout season as she left the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships with her name on six school records. Yendell continued to break her own school records, as she claimed school records in the 50 Free (21.89), the 100 Fly (52.62), and the 100 Free (49.07).
The British World Championships runs from April 4-9 and represents the sole qualifying opportunity for British swimmers to earn consideration for the 2023 World Championships in July in Fukuoka, Japan.
