PITTSBURGH—Three members of the Pitt wrestling team who qualified for the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Tulsa earned status as 2023 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced this week.
NCAA national champion Nino Bonaccorsi received his second career NWCA Scholar All-America honor following his undefeated season at 197 pounds that culminated in the Bethel Park product becoming Pitt's 17th national champion in wrestling and first since now-head coach Keith Gavin won in 2008.
Bonaccorsi, who was named the 2023 ACC Wrestling Scholar Athlete of the Year, added another academic achievement to his historic résumé. The five-time NCAA qualifier, three-time All-American and three-time ACC champion was also a NWCA Scholar All-American previously in 2021.
Micky Phillippi earned his fourth selection to the NWCA Scholar All-American list, garnering the prestigious recognition for the fourth consecutive time to make Pitt wrestling history. Phillippi's career ended with him being a five-time NCAA qualifier, five-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, two-time ACC champion and 2020 NWCA All-American, along with him a multiple-time team captain who along with Bonaccorsi helped shape the culture of Pitt wrestling since Gavin became head coach in 2017.
Making the NWCA Scholar All-America Team for the first time for the Panthers was redshirt freshman Luca Augustine, who qualified for nationals and made the ACC podium in his first active season.
Augustine has produced multiple semesters with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average since enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh and is sure to be a team leader on and off the mat for years to come.
Under Coach Gavin, Pitt has now produced 11 NWCA Scholar All-Americans, all since 2020, with multiple Panthers earning the honor in each of the past four years.
