PITTSBURGH – The Pitt track and field program put together a very strong set of performances over the weekend at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va. On both the men's and women's competitions, the Panthers etched themselves into the Top 10 of the ACC performance lists, headlined by Ilse Steigenga and Darren McQueen Jr., earning themselves PNC Achievers of the Week.
Steigenga, a junior from Exmorra, The Netherlands, recorded a new career-best in the outdoor long jump over the weekend, posting a 6.30m jump, the top spot in the field, while competing in the Heptathlon at the Virginia Challenge. Her jump is the the third-best outdoor long jump in program history and the best in the last 26 years of Pitt Track & Field. She now holds the 4th furthest long jump in the ACC this season and ranks 26trh in the nation with only two weekends remaining before the ACC Championships in Raleigh, N.C.
McQueen Jr. recorded the second fastest 100m dash in program history over the weekend, posting a 10.37 second run in the preliminary rounds of the Virginia Challenge. It is the fastest time run by a Panther in 35 years, when Lee McRae delivered a 10.04 in 1988. The freshman from Miami placed fifth in the finals but not before securing the 10th fastest time in the ACC this season. This was his first time under 10.40 this season and just the third Panther to ever achieve a 100m time under 10.40.
