PITTSBURGH – Junior forward Blake Hinson was announced as the 2023 Riley Wallace Award, presented annually by ColegeInsider.com to the top transfer in Division I college basketball, Thursday afternoon. Hinson helped lead Pitt to a 24-12 record overall, including a school-record 14-6 mark in ACC play, and an at large bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Hinson, a Second Team All-ACC selection, became the first Pitt player to average at least 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while making 50 or more threes in a season since Sam Young (2009-10). The Deltona, Fla., native led the Panthers in scoring (15.3 ppg.), rebounds (6.0 rpg.), double-figure scoring games (30), 20+ point games (9), double-doubles (5), and three-point field goals (97). He shot 38.0 percent from beyond the arc for the season, matched a school record with eight threes in a win over Wake Forest, and became just the third player in program history to make more than 95 three-pointers in a season.
Hinson began his collegiate career at Ole Miss before sitting out the past two seasons at Iowa State. He burst onto the scene for the Panthers in 2022-23 and established himself as one of the top forwards in the league. Hinson finished the year ranked among the ACC leaders in scoring (T-12th), rebounds (12th), three-pointers (1st), threes per game (5th – 2.69 3pg.), three-point percentage (4th), and defensive rebounds (12th – 4.58 drpg.).
Hinson has totaled 1,098 points, 440 rebounds, and 188 three-point field goals in 96 career games (93 starts).
The Riley Wallace award is named after the longtime University of Hawaii head coach Riley Wallace who had a lot of transfers during his time on the island. Many of those transfers helped Wallace become the winningest coach in Hawaii history. He guided Hawaii to nine postseason appearances, including a school-record streak of four straight from 2001-04. The Warriors appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times under Wallace and were invited to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) on six occasions. Prior to his arrival, the program had just one NCAA appearance and two trips to the NIT.
