First Pitt Women’s Duo to Qualify for NCAAs Since 2017-18
INDIANAPOLIS – Freshman Claire Jansen and junior Sophie Yendell were selected to compete in the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, March 15-18, at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., as announced by the NCAA Wednesday afternoon.
"This is a very exciting day and huge moment for the future of our program," said head coach Chase Kreitler. "We are very proud to have Sophie and Claire representing Pitt at NCAAs. They have both done a phenomenal job working hard toward this goal all year. Our staff and team are very proud to have our first swimming qualifiers in five years and to have the first freshmen qualifier in seventeen years. We are looking forward to a fantastic meet."

Jansen and Yendell are the first women's duo to qualify for the NCAA Championships since Lina Rathsack and Amanda Richey both qualified for the championship back in 2018. Jansen also becomes the first freshman swimmer to swim at the NCAA Championships since 2006.

Jansen will compete in the 100-yard backstroke and looks to cap off a successful freshman campaign. The Naperville, Ill., product led off for the women's 200 medley relay team of Tatum Detwiler, Yendell, and Kate Fuhrmann that broke the school record with their time of 1:36.68 at the ACC Championships. Jansen also shattered the school record in the 100 back at ACCs with a time of 52.35 and broke her own record at the UGA Last Chance Meet with a time of 52.33.

Jansen and Yendell were both also members of the women's 400 medley relay team that crushed the school record with a time of 3:36.54 – finishing in 8th-place overall at ACCS.

Yendell enters the NCAA Championship tied for the 15th on the Psych Sheet in the 50-yard freestyle (21.89). She left the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships with her name on six school records. The Tamworth, England native continues to break her own school records, as she broke the 50-yard freestyle record and claimed school records in the 100-yard butterfly (52.62), and the 100-yard freestyle (49.07).

ESPN+ will provide live digital coverage for preliminary and finals sessions Wednesday through Saturday. Tape-delayed coverage of the women's championships will be on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time, Wednesday, March 29.
