PITTSBURGH – The first week of February was kind to the Panthers as Hallie Copperwheat and Nino Bonaccorsi have been named PNC Achievers of the Week after both delivered not one, but two incredible performances in the royal and gold.
At the Backyard Brawl against West Virginia, sophomore Hallie Copperwheat tied for first place title on both beam and floor with her scores of 9.925 and 9.875, respectively. Her beam routine secured her a new career-high score. Copperwheat also claimed the all-around first-place title with her performances on Friday night - earning a 39.400.
The Leighton Buzzard, England native continued her momentum into Sunday's quad meet against Denver, Air Force, and George Washington. She completed the all-around scoring a 39.275 - tying for the third-place title overall.
In a match not only crucial to an intense top-25 dual but also vital at the top of national rankings at 197 pounds, No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi used a huge move in the final seconds to beat No. 5 Yonger Bastida by 6-4 decision, securing a takedown and back points in one sequence to turnaround a 4-2 deficit and send Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House into a frenzy. The victory for undefeated Bonaccorsi gave Pitt a 15-12 lead against No. 3 Iowa State in what might have been the most dramatic dual of the college wrestling season. Bonaccorsi also beat North Carolina's Max Shaw on Friday night, 8-2, helping Pitt secure sole possession of first place in the ACC's dual standings with a 21-11 victory over the Tar Heels. Now 12-0 this season, Bonaccorsi is likely to be ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds this week.
