PITTSBURGH – Abby Edwards from softball and track & field's Felix Wolter have been named PNC Achiever of the Week following a pair of tremendous displays over the weekend.
Edwards helped lead Pitt to a 4-1 weekend at the University of Houston Tournament with strong outings on both sides of the ball. With the game against Sam Houston tied 1-1 in the sixth inning, Edwards entered as a pinch hitter for her first career at-bat and crushed a solo go-ahead home run to center field. Edwards began the rally that saw the Panthers score four total runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure a 5-1 victory over SHSU.
Edwards dueled a strong Illinois pitcher on Sunday, entering the circle in the third inning and tossing a total of 8.1 innings of one-run ball and allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. Edwards held the Fighting Illini scoreless for 8.0 innings but was ultimately saddled with the loss after a single down the right field line scored the winning run for Illinois in the 11th inning.
Wolter earned his third straight indoor ACC title in the men's heptathlon with a score of 6058. He became the first athlete to eclipse 6000 points in an ACC Championship in the history of the conference while setting new personal, school, meet and facility records. He is the first individual to win three straight ACC Championships in program history and the first athlete to win three straight ACC Heptathlon championships in the history of the conference.
The Munich, Germany native delivered personal bests in four of the seven events in the heptathlon, finishing the 60m dash in 6.93 seconds, the 60m hurdles in 8.03 seconds, jumping 2.03m in the high jump and reaching 4.95m in pole vault.
