
Yendell, Reed and Whaley Named PNC Achievers of the Week

PITTSBURGH – From the pool to the diamond, another impressive week of performances from Panthers across the country have culminated in swimming & diving's Sophie Yendell and Dylan Reed alongside Yvonne Whaley from softball being recognized as Pitt Athletics PNC Achievers of the Week.
Senior Sophie Yendell left the 2023 Swimming and Diving ACC Championships with her name on six school records. On the first day of completion, Yendell broke the women's 200 medley relay with her team of Claire Jansen, Tatum Detwiler, and Kate Fuhrmann with their time of 1:36.68.
During the preliminary rounds of the next day, she shattered the 50 free record – earning a spot in the A Finals with her time of 22.00. Yendell is the first female Panther to earn a spot in the 50 free A Finals in an ACC Championship. In the finals, she crushed the record again – securing the 6th-place spot with her time of 21.89 and earning an NCAA B Cut. Yendell also wrote her name on the women's 200 free relay record this night – with her team's time of 1:29.18. Their performance earned them an NCAA B Cut and a 6th-place finish – the highest placement in program history.
On the third day of competition, Yendell claimed another school record – breaking the 100 fly time twice in one day. Her record-breaking time of 52.62 earned her an NCAA B Cut.
In the women's 400 medley relay, Yendell along with Jansen, Detwiler, and Furhmann all crushed the school record with their time of 3:36.54 – finishing in 8th-place overall.
The Tamworth, England native finished her record-breaking streak in the women's 100 free on the final day of competition. Yendell's time of 49.07 not only crushed the school record, but also secured her an NCAA B Cut.
During the 2023 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships, senior Dylan Reed earned a spot in the A Finals for the men's 3-meter with his 350.35 total in the preliminary round. During the finals, Reed posted six strong dives – earning the bronze medal with his 405.10 total. This was a 54.75 point increase from his preliminary performance. Reed claimed 27 points for the panthers with his third-place finish – contributing to the program record (660.5) final score.
Graduate student Yvonne Whaley returned to the starting lineup after missing the opening weekend due to injury. The Panthers finished with a 3-2 record and made it to the championship game of the FIU Panther Invitational against No. 23 Missouri.
In three games, Whaley recorded three multi-hit efforts and batted .727 (8-for-11) with five RBI, three doubles and three runs scored. Whaley helped Pitt reach the championship game by going 4-for-4 with four RBI against FIU.
