PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh seniors Max Matteazzi and Sophie Yendell have been named the ACC Men's and Women's Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon.
This is the first weekly conference honor for Matteazzi and the second weekly conference honor in Yendell's career. The Panthers' sweep of the weekly awards marks the fourth and fifth time this season the Panthers have garnered conference recognition.
Matteazzi posted strong swims throughout the prestigious Minnesota Invite, winning the 200 Breast (1:55.89), finishing second in the 400 IM (3:46.99), and picking up a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM (1:44.47) – meeting the NCAA 'B' Standard in each event. The Vincenza, Italy, native was also a member of the 200 Medley Relay (1:26.03) and the 800 Free Relay team (6:24.43) that each finished fifth. Pitt's 800 Free Relay time of 6:24.43 is ranked the No. 19 fastest time in the nation so far this season.
Yendell had a dominant weekend, breaking two school records, securing three NCAA 'B' Standard times, and helping four relays secure top-5 finishes. Yendell won the 50 Free (22.03) and broke her own school record with a second-place finish in the 100 Fly (52.08) – securing an NCAA 'B' time in each event. Yendell's time in the 50 Free is ranked No. 15 in the nation while her time in the 100 Fly is tied for No. 20.
The Tamworth, England, native was instrumental in the relays as Yendell helped the 400 Medley Relay team break the Pitt school they set back in October with a time of 3:36.10. Yendell also secured her third NCAA 'B' Standard time of the weekend as a member of the 200 Medley Relay Team that placed third with a time of 1:36.92.
