PITTSBURGH - Women's basketball's Jala Jordan and Wrestling's Cole Matthews were named the PNC Achievers of the Week after a perfect weekend from the Pitt Athletics programs.
Forward Jala Jordan had her best game as a Panther Sunday in the 94-82 home victory over Lehigh as she tied a career-high with 23 points and five rebounds across 23 minutes off the bench. Jordan was a dominant force in the paint for Pitt as she finished the game going 10-for-15 from the floor including 1-for-1 from behind the arc. The 23-point effort off the bench for Jordan were the second most points scored off the bench by a player in the ACC so far this season. So far this season, Jordan is averaging 7.1 points and 3.2 rebounds while shooting 42.9% from the floor off the Pitt bench.
Senior team captain Cole Matthews ignited Pitt wrestling's stunning 21-13 victory at No. 5 Ohio State on Sunday at the Covelli Center in Columbus, picking up one of the best wins in the nation so far this season. Matthews, ranked 20th in his weight class entering the dual, knocked off No. 3 and previously undefeated Jesse Mendez by a 4-2 decision at 141 pounds with a last-second takedown, sparking emotional celebrations and giving the Panthers a 6-3 lead in a dual they would go on to win decisively. The Panthers (6-1) have now defeated three Big Ten wrestling teams in a row (Maryland, Illinois and Ohio State) after handing the Buckeyes their biggest nonconference defeat at home since 2006.
