PITTSBURGH—After a perfect start to his 2023-24 campaign, Pitt redshirt freshman wrestler Mac Stout was named ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday by the Atlantic Coast Conference office.
Stout (5-0) defended his 197-pound title at the 2023 Clarion Open, winning all five of his bouts without conceding a takedown and justifying his No. 16 preseason ranking in his weight class by InterMat.
Pitt's successor at 197 pounds to 2023 NCAA champion Nino Bonaccorsi, Stout started his season with a pin of an opponent from Ohio State and followed that with comfortable wins over two Michigan State wrestlers, a veteran from Columbia and a highly hyped high school talent on Sunday in Clarion.
The product of nearby Mt. Lebanon went 8-4 during his redshirt season backing up Bonaccorsi; he also began last season by claiming the famous victor's helmet received by Clarion Open champions.
Pitt had six ACC Wrestler of the Week honorees last season when the Panthers finished in the top-25 for a third straight year, won a share of the ACC dual title and produced a national champion. Now the Panthers are one-for-one with conference weekly honors this time around; Virginia Tech's Caleb Henson also shared the ACC award with Stout for the opening week of the 2023-24 season.
Also on Tuesday, Pitt honored Stout as one of the athletic department's PNC Achievers of the Week along with volleyball's Rachel Fairbanks.
Keith Gavin's team, ranked No. 16 in the preseason NWCA Coaches Poll, opens the dual campaign this Sunday at Navy with a trio of matchups with the hosting Midshipmen as well as Morgan State and VMI.
Pitt will face VMI at noon followed by duals with Morgan State at 1:30 and Navy at 3 p.m.
