PITTSBURGH—Pitt senior defensive end Dayon Hayes has been named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week for his performance in the Panthers' 24-16 win over Boston College this past Thursday.
Hayes was a menace off the edge, collecting six tackles, three tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks and two deflected passes. His TFLs went for 15 yards in losses.
On one of his deflections, he batted a pass directly back at Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos, who caught the ball and then was dropped for a two-yard loss by Hayes.
Hayes helped spearhead a defensive effort that held the ACC's top rushing attack (202.5 yards per game) to 154—more than 48 yards below the Eagles' average.
On the season, Hayes has collected 40 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, six quarterback hurries, four sacks and a forced fumble. He leads the team in TFLs and hurries, while ranking second in sacks.
This is the second career ACC Player of the Week award for Hayes. He previously was honored for his three-sack performance at Miami (Nov. 26, 2022).
Hayes and the Panthers play at Duke this Saturday. The game will kick off at noon and be televised by ACC Network.
