PITTSBURGH – Pitt lacrosse student-athletes Jill Fenech, Camdyn O'Donnell and Abby Thorne have been named team captains for the 2023-24 season as announced by head coach Emily Boissonneault Friday morning.
Fenech, a junior, and Thorne, a senior, will both be competing in their third season this spring for the Panthers, while O'Donnell, a fifth-year student-athlete, will play in her second in the blue and gold.
"Beyond being a great competitor over her first two seasons, Jill's compassion and supporting nature have been a constant within the program," said Boissonneault. "We are excited to see her step into a captain role."
"Being named a captain for this upcoming season is such an honor," said Fenech. "Cam and Abby have been such incredible leaders, I am privileged to join them this year and I can't wait to bring my energy and experience into the 2024 season. These girls and this team mean so much to me, we have been working so hard and building chemistry for two seasons and are beyond excited to make this the best one yet. Get ready to Hail!"
Fenech played in and started all 17 games in 2023 for Pitt. The midfielder/draw-taker scored seven goals, added two assists, secured 59 draw controls and 24 ground balls and caused 14 turnovers last season.
"Camdyn is a returning offensive captain that brings a ton of energy and passion for the game," said Boissonneault. "It has been clear since she transferred to Pitt that she is committed to helping us build a legacy."
"It is an honor and privilege to be named captain with Abby and Jill," said O'Donnell. "I am excited to use my four years of college lacrosse experience to continue building on our amazing culture. I am grateful that I have another year to be a part of this program. This team and coaching staff is extremely special and bought into continuing our legacy. We cannot wait to showcase that in the 2024 season. As always, HAIL TO PITT!"
O'Donnell, like Fenech, played in and started each of the 17 games last year. She accumulated 27 points (21G, 6A) and added four ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw control in 2023.
"As a returning captain, Abby brings a unique perspective having been one of our original 14 student-athletes and training with us in our non-competition year," said Boissonneault. "She is an incredible competitor that pushes herself, teammates and coaches. We are grateful for her leadership and continuous commitment to the program."
"I am honored to have another chance to lead this team," said Thorne. "I take pride in the progression we have made as a program, and I look forward to making an impact this season through my leadership on and off the field."
Thorne was a defensive stalwart for the Panthers, appearing and starting in all 17 games as a junior. She racked up 23 ground balls and caused 16 turnovers.
The 2024 Pitt Panthers return 30 student-athletes and added five freshmen and three transfers to make up this year's squad. The season gets underway in February.
