No. 23 Panthers Earn Hard Fought Draw Versus No. 9 Duke

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh men's soccer team battled No. 9 Duke to a 0-0 draw Saturday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field. Sophomore goalie Cabral Carter collected six saves for Pitt and Duke's keeper made a pair of big saves in the 61st minute to preserve the clean sheet.
Pitt, ranked 23rd in the latest US Soccer Coaches Poll, is now 6-4-4 on the season with a 2-2-3 mark in ACC play, while the Blue Devils move to 8-3-2 and 3-3-1 in ACC play.
The Panthers maintained the run of play for the bulk of the contest and had the best scoring opportunity of the night in the 61st minute as Abdoulaye Toure fed Luis Sahmkow just above the penalty mark. Duke keeper Julian Eyestone made a sprawling kick save of the Sahmkow shot and then laid out to make an immediate save on an Eben McIntyre strike off the rebound.
Pitt nearly unlocked the score in the 83rd minute but Guilherme Feitosa's shot from just inside the box slid wide of the net. Duke countered in the 85th minute with its best scoring chance as Bull Jorgensen stepped through a Pitt defender to intercept a pass from Carter to the top of the box. Carter cleaned up the dangerous turnover with a smothering save of Jorgensen's attempt.
The Panthers mounted one last threatening attack in the final minute as Feitosa's header off a Mateo Maillefaud diagonal cross from 25-yards out again sailed just wide of the post.
Pitt had nine shots and five corners on the night while holding possession for 58 percent of the contest. Duke had six shots on goal with just a pair of corners.
CLEAN SHEETS
Pitt recorded its second consecutive clean sheet and its sixth of the season. Carter has 22 saves in the six games he has held the opposition scoreless this season.

Pitt returns to action Friday, Oct. 27 as they travel to South Bend, IN to take on No. 6 Notre Dame in the regular season finale.
