PITTSBURGH – Women's soccer's Amanda West and Football's M.J. Devonshire were named the PNC Achievers of the Week following convincing wins by both programs this past weekend.
Women's soccer's Amanda West was the one of the catalysts for this weekend's shutout against Syracuse. West was able to place two goals and one assist against the Orange, helping the Panthers secure the 6-0 win on Saturday afternoon. The fifth-year senior netted the third goal before the end of the first half off of Keera Melenhorst's assist. At the 60th minute, West sent a clean cross to Sarah Schupansky who sent it to Landy Mertz to complete the goal – securing the second assist on Mertz's goal. Just minutes later, West added to her all-time scoring lead and completed the sixth and final goal for the Panthers. After Saturday's ACC matchup, the forward now totals eight goals, five assists and 21 points on the season. Currently, West is ranked first in the conference for both shots per game (4.13) and shots on goal per game (2.27). She is also ranked in the top-10 for goals per game (.53), points per game (1.40), shot accuracy (.548), total assists (5), total goals (8), and total points (21).
Football's M.J. Devonshire had six tackles, broke up five passes and returned an 86-yard interception for a touchdown in Saturday's 38-21 upset win over the No. 14 Louisville Cardinals. Devonshire's interception return for a touchdown was the longest by a Pitt player since September 13, 1997, when Chiffon Allen took a 97-yard interception return to the house at Houston. That was the third career pick-six for Devonshire, he is the Panthers' active leader in defensive touchdowns with three. Devonshire was also named the ACC Defensive Back of the Week and the Reese's Senior Bowl Co-Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against the previously unbeaten Cardinals. He has 15 tackles, 8 pass break ups and one interception on the season. The Panthers will travel to Winston-Salem, NC this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Wake Forest.
