PITTSBURGH—Pitt senior cornerback M.J. Devonshire and redshirt freshman defensive end Samuel Okunlola received accolades today for their performances in the Panthers' 38-21 victory over previously unbeaten Louisville.
Devonshire was named the Reese's Senior Bowl Co-Defensive Player of the Week and ACC Defensive Back of the Week after he collected six tackles, broke up five passes and returned an interception for an 86-yard touchdown against the Cardinals.
Okunlola earned the ACC's Rookie of the Week honor. He compiled four tackles, a strip sack and recovered his own forced fumble in the Louisville victory.
Devonshire's pick six was the third of his career. It also marked the longest INT return by a Pitt player since Chiffon Allen's 97-yarder for a score at Houston on Sept. 13, 1997.
Devonshire leads the ACC and ranks fifth nationally with an average of 1.5 passes defended per game. In addition to his interception, he has a team-high eight pass breakups.
Okunlola continues to earn prominent time on Pitt's defensive line. He is tied for the team lead with three sacks this season and is a viable Freshman All-America candidate.
The Panthers play at Wake Forest this Saturday. The game will be televised by ACC Network and kick off at 3:30 p.m.
