
Pitt Drops Hard Fought Matchup with Clemson, 75-74

PITTSBURGH – Jamarius Burton scored a game-high 28 points as Pitt overcame an early double-figure deficit to take a late game lead before falling to Clemson (13-3, 5-0 ACC) 75-74 Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt moves to 11-5 overall and 4-1 in the ACC with each of its past two defeats coming by one-point.
Chase Hunter paced Clemson with 17 points, including a pair of tough jumpers in the closing minutes of play to help the Tigers overcome a 69-62 deficit in the final 2:29 of play. Hunter Tyson added 15 points and 10 rebounds as Clemson won its fifth consecutive game.
Blake Hinson and Greg Elliott each knocked down three three-pointers as the Panthers finished with 11 made threes. Hinson finished with 14 points and six rebounds, while Elliott had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Clemson jumped out to a 27-17 lead in the opening half by putting constant pressure on the Panthers interior defense. The Tigers scored 16 points in the paint and were shooting 69 percent from the field in the opening 13 minutes of play.
Pitt responded with a 23-11 run to close the half and grab a 40-38 lead at the break despite starters Hinson and Federiko Federiko both being sidelined with foul trouble. Nelly Cummings scored six points during the run including back-to-back left-wing jumpers off the dribble to tie the game at 34 with 2:36 remaining.
Jorge Diaz Graham knocked in a pair of free throws in the final minute and Nate Santos beat the halftime buzzer with an off-balance jumper from the right baseline to send the Panthers into halftime with a two-point edge. The Panthers overcame a cold shooting start from the field with six first half threes and a 12-of-14 performance from the foul line.
After a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes of the second half, Pitt used an 8-0 run over a three-minute span to grab a 67-59 lead. Elliott began the run with a three-pointer from the top of the key at the 8:33 mark and Burton capped it off by knocking down four free throws on consecutive possessions.
Clemson responded with a 9-0 run that included a couple backed in runners late in the shot clock, tying the game at 69 on a Chauncey Wiggins hard bank in the lane late in the shot clock with 2:22 remaining. Brevin Galloway hit a shot falling down in the lane on Clemson's next possession for a two-point lead.
Burton countered with a tough finish through contact to tie the game at 71 before Chase Hunter hit a tough fading 15-foot jumper to help Clemson regain the lead. The Tigers bruising defense got a stop on Pitt's next possession and Hunter Tyson made a pair of free throws to extend the lead.
Nike Sibande's corner three in the closing seconds proved to be the final margin as the Panthers were unable to come up with a steal on the ensuing inbounds play.
LOW TURNOVERS
The Panthers committed a season-low seven turnovers in the game, marking the third consecutive contest with eight or fewer turnovers. Cummings had four assists with just one turnover and now has 12 assists and one turnover in the past two games.
PUNISHED IN THE PAINT
Clemson used its size throughout the rotation to post a decisive 34-14 advantage in point in the paint. The Tigers scored 16 points in the paint in the opening 13 minutes before getting eight of its final 11 points in the game in the lane.
BOOST ON THE BOARDS
With Pitt's starting post players in foul trouble throughout the game, Pitt got a big lift off the bench from Guillermo Diaz Graham and Nate Santos. The duo combined for 10 rebounds with Diaz Graham collected four boards on the offensive end and Santos grabbed four of his five rebounds on the defense.

Pitt has now won 10 of its past 12 games with both loses coming by one point. The Panthers are now 3-3 on the season in games decided by five points or fewer.
