PITTSBURGH – Ben Sauls from Football and Wrestling's Reece Heller have been named PNC Achievers of the Week after bringing 2022 to an end with a couple of strong showings.
Redshirt sophomore kicker Ben Sauls set a Sun Bowl record with five field goals in Pitt's 37-35 victory over No. 18 UCLA in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl. His record setting fifth field goal came from 47 yards out in the dying seconds to secure the victory for the Panthers. Sauls was named Special Teams MVP of the game, helping Pitt close out the year with a 9-4 record. With a 9-4 campaign to follow up last year's ACC title, Coach Pat Narduzzi's team has won 20 games since 2021, Pitt's most victories over a two-year span since 1981-82.
Redshirt Junior Reece Heller earned himself the 184-pound title at the 2022 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in NOW Arena in Chicago. Heller was the highest individual points scorer from the tournament, earning a 12-0 sudden victory in the opening round over Illinois' Connell before earning a win-by-fall over West Virginia's No. 30 Anthony Carman in the semifinals at the 4:26 mark. In the final bout, Heller overcame Jaritt Shinhoster from UW-Whitewater by decision, 7-5, to take home the 184-pound title in his home state.
