PITTSBURGH – Pitt will honor Jerome Lane and one of the most iconic highlights in college basketball history with "Send it in, Jerome!" night Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers host Wake Forest on the 35th anniversary of Lane's backboard shattering dunk from Jan. 25, 1988, against Providence.
Lane, a two-time All-America selection and a 2022 Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, will be on hand to sign autographs at the Pitt Shop in the Thomas E. Richards Family Lobby at the Petersen Events Center from 6-6:45 p.m. and will also be recognized on the court during the game.
Pitt is providing two terrific giveaways at the game with the first 1,500 fans receiving a voucher for a "Send it in, Jerome!" pint glass with a shattered glass design. In addition, the first 1,000 students in the Oakland Zoo will receive Jerome Lane jersey shirts.
Pint glass distribution will take place as fans exit the arena following the game at Concourse A and the Richards Family Lobby. Distribution will not begin prior to the under eight media timeout in the second half and fans must exit the arena after picking up their pint glass.
Tickets for "Send it in, Jerome!" night are available through the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-7488 or online HERE.
Pitt is currently 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the ACC heading into road games Georgia Tech (Jan. 14), and Louisville (Jan. 18).
Jerome Lane – Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame Bio
A rugged 6-foot-6 power forward at Pitt from 1985-88, Lane remains one of the most popular players in Pitt's long basketball history. He shot to stardom as a sophomore when he became the smallest player in 30 years to lead the NCAA in rebounding (13.5 avg.). Lane led the Big East in rebounding for two consecutive seasons (1986-88), becoming the first player to accomplish that feat. More than a board crasher, Lane was also a deft ballhandler and the Panthers' second-leading scorer in each of his final two seasons. He gained iconic status for his tomahawk dunk against Providence that shattered a backboard at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House, delaying a national ESPN telecast for more than 30 minutes. Teamed with center Charles Smith, Lane helped form one of the nation's most imposing frontcourt tandems. The duo would lead Pitt to consecutive Big East titles (1987 and 1988) and NCAA berths. A two-time All-American, Lane finished his college career with 1,217 points and 970 boards. He was a first-round NBA draft selection by the Denver Nuggets in 1988 and later played for the Indiana Pacers, Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers.
