PITTSBURGH – Courtney Buzzerio of Volleyball and Football's Erick Hallett II were named PNC Achievers of the Week after a perfect, 5-0 week of Pitt Athletics.
Courtney Buzzerio led Pitt to historic success this week, finishing with a team-best 29 kills (4.83/set) on .391 hitting as No. 12 Pitt swept Tennessee and No. 5 Ohio State inside Fitzgerald Field House. The sweep of Ohio State was the first Top-5 home sweep in program history and just the second time Pitt has swept a Top-5 opponent. Buzzerio was at her best in that match, making 15 kills for a season-best 5.00 kills/set on .412 hitting. She made her last 12 kills of the match without committing an error as the Panthers improved to 9-2.
Against Tennessee, Buzzerio led the offense with 14 kills on .367 hitting. Her hitting percentage for the season (.364) is seventh-best in the conference overall and the best for any non-middle blocker. Buzzerio leads the nation in hitting percentage by a pin hitter with more than 250 attacks this season.
Pitt senior safety Erick Hallett II helped the Panthers maintain their top-25 status and improve to 2-1 following a 34-13 victory on Saturday night at Western Michigan. Hallett made two vital plays in the second half, intercepting Broncos QB Jack Salopek twice, including one INT in the end zone with Pitt holding on to a one-score lead. It was the second multi-interception game of Hallett's Pitt career following his performance in the 2021 ACC Championship Game in which he also had two picks and returned one for a touchdown to be named Swofford Most Valuable Player.
Hallett has been responsible for four turnovers forced by Pitt's defense this season (two interceptions and two fumble recoveries); in fact, he is the only player in the FBS with two picks and two fumble recoveries in 2022.
